The 2024 Fly School will be the third time we have presented this course. The original course was organized by Emily Hartop (assisted by Lisa Gonzalez, Estella Hernandez , Giar-Ann Kung, and Maria Wong) , who was tired of hearing Brian Brown and other dipterists talk about having a training course on Diptera, and challenged us to actually get it done. We announced it a the International Congress of Entomology in Orlando, Florida, and it was held near Wrightwood, California, USA, in 2017 (with generous donations from Chris Thompson, Terry Whitworth, and the Williston Fund of the Smithsonian Institution – thanks to Torsten Dikow).
The second Fly School took place in Camp KEEP, Montaña de Oro State Park, California, USA, in 2019, as we planned to repeat it every two years. Again, Chris, Terry, the Williston Fund (Torsten) and the Los Angeles County Museum’s (LACM) Entomology Department, underwrote the project. This time, Giar-Ann Kung organized the course, aided by Courtney Richenbacher from the American Museum of Natural History and Estella Hernandez (LACM).
